You can part-exchange a car with a private plate if you don't want to keep it, no action is needed. To keep the plate, you must put it on retention with the DVLA before handover, receiving a V778 certificate and updated V5C. Delivery with a private plate isn't possible; you must add it after delivery using the DVLA online service, ensuring you have required documents and confirmation before fitting plates.
Can I part-exchange my car with a private plate?
It depends on whether you want to keep it.
If you DON’T want to keep the plate - Nothing to do – we may just confirm details before handover.
If you DO want to keep the plate - You’ll need to put the plate on retention with the DVLA before handover. You can do this via the DVLA online service
You’ll receive:
✔️ A V778 retention certificate
✔️ A new V5C (logbook) showing the original reg number
Before handover, make sure: Original number plates are fitted and you've received the updated V5C
⚠️ Important: It can take up to 4 weeks for the V5C to arrive so please allow plenty of time when booking your delivery or collection
Can I have my cinch car delivered with my private plate on it?
No, we can't deliver the car with your private plate. You'll need to put the plate on retention and then add to the car once it's been delivered.
You can put a private plate on your car online via the DVLA online service.
Before you start, you'll need:
- Your vehicle's V5C logbook
- Your V750 Certificate of Entitlement or V778 Retention Document
- The registered keeper's postcode shown on the logbook
- A vehicle that's taxed and has a valid MOT (if required)
